Testing procedures and standards
Testing of cut resistance according to DIN EN 388:2019-03
The basis for evaluating cut protection is the standard DIN EN 388:2019-03 for "Protective gloves against mechanical risks." In this process, materials are comprehensively tested for abrasion, tear resistance, puncture resistance, and cut resistance. There are two methods for testing cut resistance:
- Coupe-Test: This method uses a rotating circular blade to measure the number of cycles required to cut through the material. From the required cycles and the wear on the blade, an index is calculated that determines the classification into levels 1 to 5. This test is particularly suitable for materials where the blade glides evenly over the surface.
- TDM-Test (according to DIN EN ISO 13997): In this method, cut resistance is tested using a straight blade. The blade is drawn across the material with increasing force until it is severed. Classification into levels A to F is based on the force in Newtons required to cut through the material. This test is preferred for highly cut-resistant materials that could dull the blade.
Additionally, puncture resistance is tested. A test nail is used to determine the force in Newtons required to penetrate the material. Classification is divided into levels 1 to 4 and is particularly important for protection against sharp objects.
Our development in the area of cut protection
Our research and development department is continuously working on optimizing knit qualitites with protective functions. In addition, we rely on high-quality purchased materials in order to offer a wide range of possible applications.
Product selection:
Base Layer
- Light cut protection –
also available as a seamless version, ideal for discreet protection with high wearing comfort.
- Medium to high cut protection – suitable for medium to high-risk zones, either fully or partially.
Tube scarf
- A solution for protection against light cuts, scratches, or sharp objects.
- Optionally combinable with
additional heat and flame protection.
Special focus: Our textiles combine functionality with maximum comfort and breathability – because safety should never come at the expense of well-being.
Innovations in stab protection
Stab protection on a textile basis is a challenge that we approach with passion. While many suppliers focus on bulky and multi-layered solutions, we concentrate on lightweight and comfortable stab protection textiles.
Our approaches:
- Collaboration with research and industry partners to develop new types of protective clothing.
- Special focus on protection against hypodermic needles, sharp objects and small stabbing weapons - ideal for emergency services, security forces and nursing staff.
- Integration of high-strength fibers and innovative coatings that ensure both freedom of movement and effective protection.
Ballistic protection according to VPAM
In addition to cut and stab protection textiles, we develop ballistic protection solutions tested according to the VPAM guidelines (Association of Test Centers for Attack-Resistant Materials and Constructions).
VPAM testing:
- Allgemeine Prüfungsrichtlinien (APR): Define general requirements, testing procedures, and protection levels.
- Ballistic Protective Vest (BSW): Specifies product-specific requirements and test methods for protection against projectiles from short and long firearms.
Depending on the protection level, specific calibers, firing distances, and impact velocities are defined. The key criteria are that the projectile does not penetrate the material and that the residual energy transferred to the body remains below a specified limit.
Additionally, stab protection can be tested according to the VPAM KDIW guideline, which addresses threats from blades, spikes, injection needles, and cubes. VPAM guidelines also serve as the basis for the police Technical Guidelines (TR).
comazo|protect, in collaboration with a partner, has developed an inconspicuous, flexible, and lightweight protection system in the form of an undershirt.
- The removable soft ballistic insert is certified according to VPAM Level 2 (corresponding to TR class: SK1).
- This system combines protection against projectiles and stabs with high wearing comfort and freedom of movement.
